Minnesota's Tallest Waterfall, Best Viewed from Canada | High Falls on the Pigeon River

On a cold Monday morning in early winter, we set out on a hike to High Falls on the Pigeon River, taking the Canadian route through Ontario’s Pigeon River Provincial Park. While both the U.S. and Canadian sides offer trails to the falls, the Canadian side provides a far superior panoramic view, allowing us to see the full width of the 120-foot waterfall without obstruction. High Falls is Minnesota's tallest waterfall! The snow-covered trail made for a peaceful winter trek, and as we reached the falls, we were met with a breathtaking sight—massive ice formations, mist rising through the frozen air, and the powerful roar of water cutting through the winter landscape. From this side, we could fully appreciate the scale and beauty of High Falls, something that isn’t as visible from the U.S. side. Before heading back, we stopped at the fireplace chimney ruins, a historic stone structure standing as a reminder of past explorers and travelers who once vacationed here. To end the adventure, we carefully stepped onto the frozen Pigeon River, literally standing on the natural border between Canada and the U.S., with ice stretching in both directions.
